Minority says they will persist until governor and deputies of BoG step down

Ayariga

Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has stated that the Minority group remains committed to investigating the allocation of $250 million for the Bank of Ghana’s new headquarters construction.

Ayariga argues that the explanation provided by Governor Dr. Ernest Addison has only worsened the situation, prompting the need for a deeper inquiry.

Dr. Ernest Addison recently refuted allegations that the Central Bank violated procurement regulations during the new building’s planning.

However, in an interview, Mahama Ayariga emphasized his stance that the governor should step down. He reiterated the Minority’s determination to use all means necessary to remove both the Central Bank’s governor and deputy governors from their positions.

Ayariga expressed strong dissatisfaction with the governor’s justification for spending such a substantial amount of money amid the country’s current challenges.

Ayariga rejected Dr. Ernest Addison’s statements, maintaining that any structural issues can be resolved through parliamentary review. He firmly asserted that the Minority will hold the governor accountable and will persist in demanding his resignation. Ayariga added that they will continue with demonstrations until their objective is achieved.

While criticism against the new building’s cost has been public and widespread, the Bank of Ghana has defended the decision, citing the outdated state of its current head office built in the 1960s.

Governor Addison reaffirmed during a recent press conference that the Bank adhered to procurement laws in the pursuit of the new headquarters construction.
