Ghanaians were thrown into a state of frenzy last Sunday over a customized armband worn by the Captain of Ghana’s Black Stars Asamoah Gyan when the Black Stars thumped their Ethiopian opponents 5:0 in an African Cup of Nations qualifier at the Baba Yara stadium.
Speaking on Spice 91.9 FM, former Ghana midfielder Ntow Gyan stated that it was improper for Asamoah to wear a custom made captains armband. He referenced the Vice President of the Ghana football Association’s claim that members of the Black Stars management committee were unaware of Asamah Gyan’s intention to use the customised band.
“According to George Afriyie, even the management committee members knew nothing about it. Asamoah Gyan should have made the public aware that he intended to wear the customized armband on the field of play so that they wouldn’t be taken by surprise.
He added that “Because the public didn’t know, they will assume that there’s a problem because normally he should have given the armband to the assistant and since he went for a different one, the onlookers who know nothing about it will fuss over it.”
Kofi Ntow Gyan concluded that it was improper for Asamoah Gyan to wear the customized band since only one captain’s armband is introduced as the one to be used during pre-matches checks.
