Ghana Tourism Authority Engages Industry Players On New L.I To Regulate Tourist Enterprises

In a bid to deepen understanding and buy-in for the new Tourism Regulations 2019 under the Tourism Act, 2011 (Act 817), the Ghana Tourism Authority have begun a nationwide stakeholder engagement with industry players.

The draft Tourism Regulations 2019 is aimed at standardizing and regulating all tourism sites and enterprises in the country so as to improve quality and service delivery.

One of such engagements was held in Takoradi on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 for the Western and Central Regions of Ghana.

Speaking to Business Today’s Nana Yaw Kumi, the Chief Executive Officer for the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr.Kwasi Agyemang said the draft Legislative Instrument has undergone a series of review right from the Attorney General’s office, parliamentary select committees on trade industry and tourism, as well as other agencies responsible to make it effective.

“As we all know the unfortunate  incident that happened in Kintampo has brought to the fore the need for proper standardization and regulation of our tourist sites and attractions. And so for the past one year we’ve been working on this L.I, going through various stages of drafting, and stakeholder of stakeholder engagements”, he clarified.

He added that “we’ve gone through these processes because as required by law, these are the laws that are going to govern their operations.  And it is important that, they as people on the ground are able to review and if possible make significant input to the structure that we’ve put in place.”

The Dean of the faculty of applied sciences at the Takoradi Technical University, Dr. Theodora Hagan however stressed that the move is commendable.

She was delighted that a particular attention is given to the tourist sites and other attractions, adding the industry has been obsessive of the hospitality sector.

“For me in tourism, attraction comes first but it looks as if the GTA is more interested in the hotel sub-sector of tourism. But the attraction subsector of tourism is very important because that is the pull factor..it is what draws the tourists to the country”, she explained.
