Takoradi Port Builds Up Capacity To Support Onshore Oil and Gas Exploration In The Voltaian Basin
The Takoradi Port of the Ghana Port and Harbours Authority remains a major player in the oil and gas industry in Ghana, and thus seek to explore opportunities with the yet to be operationalized Voltaian Basin onshore oil and gas exploration project.
Takoradi Port according to it management recorded a 33 percent increase in supply vessels servicing Ghana’s oil/gas fields representing a total of 983 in 2018, as against 742 recorded same period in 2017.
In an interview with Business Today, the Director of the Port of Takoradi, Captain Ebenezer Kojo Afadzie mentioned that management expect a significant rise in vessel calls the coming years, as GNPC earmarks six new oil blocks in the Western Basin for development.
Captain Afadzie is however optimistic the construction of the oil hub at the port will be a strategic asset to support the current onshore oil and gas exploration in the Voltaian Basin.
“The board of GPHA and Management are in talks with a strategic partner to quickly start the construction of the oil services hub. Because the oil services hub is not in place, some of our stakeholders are still using the naval base although we are told most of you have decided to divert your vessels back to Takoradi port some are still using the naval base. We want to assure you that plans are far advanced and we hoping that by the first quarter of next year, construction of the oil service hub will commence”, he explained.
He noted that “according to GNPC, six new blocks have been earmarked for oil and gas development in the Western Basin of Ghana.
The port he said will continue to be the main strategic base of the industry going forward and will fully support the current onshore oil and gas exploration in the Voltaian basin.
