2023 Budget: Increase In Taxes Will Increase Plight Of Ghanaians – Economist

An Economist, Seth Terkper has said, the 2023 Budget Statement and Economic Policy should prioritise key projects in the country.

This, he said will help maximize revenue to help the ordinary Ghanaian as the country faces economic hardship.

Mr. Terkper said, though there have been predictions over the increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) this will worsen the plight of Ghanaians.

He called for a reduction in government expenditure.

Meanwhile, the Dean of the Cape Coast Business School, Prof John Gatsi said, government must rather intensify the e-vat system to generate more revenue as increasing it would be disastrous as predicted.

“We hope to see a budget that the revenue will be consumed by two items, that is payment of interest on loans and emoluments. so we need to find how we are going to finance goods and services and capital expenditure.

I think the tax increase will be disastrous. What I think should be done will be to intensify the E-VAT system to raise more revenue but an increase in VAT will be disastrous,” He said.
