The Takoradi Technical University (TTU) in the Western Region continues to provide an academic setting where students with disability are suitably supported and encouraged, and are independent from any form of rejection, discrimination, or harassment, so that they may accomplish their full potential and make career choices for themselves.
Currently, there are seventy-four (74) students with disability at the University, fourteen of whom have graduated, including seven hearing-impaired students.
Meanwhile, some eighteen (18) students with disability have already been given admission into different programmes of study this year while more are expected.
This was made known by Rev. Prof John Frank Eshun, Vice-Chancellor of TTU at the 5th Congregation of the University to take stock of various activities that took place during the academic year as well as confer degrees, diplomas and certificates to deserving graduates who have successfully completed their programs of study in the 2019/2020 academic year.
He congratulated them for rising above their disability and making meaning of the statement that “disability is not inability”.
He also eulogised the staff of the University for assisting and providing them with special services required to support them and further expressed gratitude to GNPC Foundation for assisting in the payment of tuition fees for some of them.
The University believes that disability is an integral aspect of a diversified society, hence the need to encourage self-determination to ensure equal opportunities for our persons with disabilities.
Rev Prof Eshun emphasized that the University shall strive to ensure that no student is deprived of his/her inclusion and participation in any aspect of University life as a result of a disability.
He stated that the University procured and supplied Veronica buckets, liquid soaps, hand sanitizers and tissue papers to staff and students as well as an installation of hand dryers and dispensers at some vantage places on campus.
He hinted that as part of its Social Responsibility, the University through the Fashion Department and some alumni produced and donated over 50,000 facemasks for distribution to staff and students.
Other beneficiaries include corporate institutions, Ministry of Education, Regional Coordinating Council, MMDAs, Metro and Municipal Health Directorates, Information Service Department, market women and some communities in the region.
He further thanked the Government for providing PPEs to be distributed to staff and students, and the Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL) for fumigating the University.
