Drivers In Sekondi Takoradi Gear Up to Demonstrate over high Cost of Fuel

Some drivers in the Sekondi – Takoradi Metropolis are gearing up to demonstrate over the high cost of fuel prices in the country. The drivers are calling to the attention of the government to scrap off some taxes levied on fuel prices.

Ahead of the budget presentation by the Finance Minister, the leadership of the GPRTU presented a petition to the Transport Minister in Accra to address the concerns of the organization.

The drivers however, had their hopes dashed as their concerns were not addressed by the Finance Minister in his presentation.

In our visit to the various lorry stations in Takoradi, some drivers bemoaned the rate at which prices of fuel is affecting their business. It was observed that, drivers have their vehicles decorated with red bands to indicate their displeasure on how fuel prices are regulated the pumps.

Some of the drivers at the Accra Bus station pointed that “the display of the red bands on the vehicle is to tell government that we are not happy with the current regulation of fuel prices. Every now and then, there is an increase on fuel prices and it is affecting our businesses. We are bread winners in our families, but due to the high cost of fuel, we are unable to look after our children and wives. The government must definitely look at the prices of fuel or else we go on demonstration in some few days to come.”

At the Sekondi Trotro station, the story was not different as vehicles had red bands tied to them. Drivers also share their sentiments on how fuel prices keep soaring every day. They also threatened demonstration in some days to come, should government fails to heed to their cry.

Moreover, drivers who shared their views with Spice Fm in an interview described that the government is not being fair with them. They stated that, they make no income from their livelihood as much of the money is spent on fuel.
