Most of us have difficulty sleeping from time to time. An activity that is supposed to be so simple to achieve and is important for the proper development of the mind, and recuperation of the body has become so arduous task.

If you have been having difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep, this article is for you.
Trouble sleeping at night comes in varying forms.

For some, it might be difficulty falling asleep at night, for others, it might be waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to sleep again and for others, it might be waking up multiple times each night.

Why can’t I sleep at night?
If you are asking yourself this question, then it’s time to assess yourself. There are many reasons why one is having difficulty sleeping. Difficulty sleeping can be temporary, caused by temporary stressors, lifestyle changes, etc. these types get better on their own. Consumption of caffeinated products, and alcohol, and eating too much or too close to bedtime can affect your sleep. Longer-term problems with getting to sleep are most times linked with psychiatric or psychological causes such as depression or brought about by certain health conditions such as Parkinsons’ disease or some medications.

How then can I sleep better?
• The quality of our sleep can be greatly improved by lifestyle changes such as making time for regular exercise. Exercise helps you to expend energy and this helps you feel tired when bedtime comes around. Exercise can improve your mood, and reduce stress and anxiety as well as your overall health and weight.
• Be consistent. Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning, including on weekends.
• Make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, relaxing, and at a comfortable temperature.
• Remove electronic devices, such as TVs, computers, and phones.
• Avoid large meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime.
• If your inability to sleep persists for a long period, please talk to your doctor or psychologist.
