Chris Hughton sets AFCON qualification as main objective

Black Stars coach Chris Hughton says his main target is to secure qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast.

The 64-year-old is just a win away from securing a place in next year’s tournament as the Black Stars lead Group E with eight points after Hughton led the team in earning four points from their doubleheader against Angola in March.

“This has to be the priority to get results in these games because ultimately it is about making sure we are in Afcon in January. [We have to] qualify for Afcon in January,” Hughton told Supersport.

Hughton is also keen on developing talents from the local scene and integrating them into the Black Stars.

“This is the immediate after that it is building something. We have good young players coming through and this will also give me the opportunity to look at more of the local players over a period of time.”

Having previously served as Technical Advisor for the team, Hughton signed a 21-month contract that will see him in charge as head coach until the end of 2024.

His next task is to lead the Black Stars against Madagascar and the Central African Republic in the fourth and fifth rounds of matches in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
