Authorities have reported that human remains were discovered on Saturday in Southern California close to the area where Julian Sands, a missing British actor, has been sought after by detectives.

The Fontana Sheriff’s Station was contacted by civilian hikers who had found human remains in the Mt. Baldy wilderness, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department declared in a news release. The remains should have been positively identified by next week, according to investigators.

Investigators tracked pings from Sands’ cell phone to the Mount Baldy region, where they concentrated their search after he had not been seen since going hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains northeast of Los Angeles in January.

Up until last Saturday, the active search had mostly been dormant due to bad weather and harsh conditions.

More than 80 search and rescue volunteers, deputies, and staff members took part in the operation, which was aided by two helicopter crews and drone crews.

Officials said, the volunteers searched in “remote areas across Mount Baldy and conducted aerial search and assessment efforts.”

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, “despite the recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions,” and numerous search areas include steep terrain covered in “10 or more feet of ice and snow.”

Gloria Huerta, a department spokesperson, told reporters in January officials were forced to halt their search operations due to bad weather and avalanche danger.

The television characters that Sands is best known for are Superman’s father Jor-El in “Smallville” and Vladimir Bierko, an antagonist in season five of “24.”

He also appeared in two films from the “Warlock” horror franchise as the title character, and his other screen credits include “Arachnophobia” and “Leaving Las Vegas. ”
