New Fisheries And Aquaculture Policy In The Offing To Deal With Challenges In The Sector

As part of measures to sustain fisheries and aquaculture resources, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has resolved to adopt procedures to formulate a new national fisheries and agriculture policy to replace the 2008 policy.

This according to the Sector Minister, Hawa Koomson, would include a new geared specification for industrial trawl vessels and implantation of all fleet closed season.

Hence the fisheries policy will also provide 11 thematic areas that will address emerging challenges confronting the fisheries and aquaculture sub-sector in the country.

She said, this when the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and the Fisheries Commission organised a National Fish Festival in Accra, under the theme, ” Promoting Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture for national development”.

The festival is to recognize the role of the fisheries sub-sector in national development.

Madam Hawa Koomson noted that the fisheries and aquaculture development sector has not been able to achieve its full potential hence poverty is still high in the fishing communities.

She commended players in the sector for their immense contribution.

Director of the Fisheries Commission Fred Kwesi Boadu said the fishing industry provides about 70 percent of animal protein in the country.

The fish festival is to celebrate players in the fishing industry and give them the platform to showcase their products to the public.
