Brazil: Soccer star Neymar fined $3.5 million for environmental offense

Brazil soccer star Neymar, was fined 16 million reais ($3.33 million) by Brazilian authorities on Monday for violating environmental laws while building his coastal mansion in southeast Brazil.

Local authorities first alleged late last month and later confirmed on Monday that the luxury project had broken the rules governing the use and transportation of sand, rock, and freshwater sources.

A spokesperson for Neymar declined to comment on the matter.

His residence is located on the southern coast of Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro state, in the town of Mangaratiba.

An artificial lake that was built at the mansion, according to a statement from Mangaratiba’s environmental organization, violated the environment.

Along with the fine, the case will be investigated by the state civil police, environmental protection office, local attorney general’s office, and other environmental control bodies.
