Cecilia Dapaah: “There’s not much to say about it, but it is a worry to all of us” -Dr Addison on keeping foreign currency at home

Dr. Ernest Addison, the governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), has voiced concern regarding the practice of people keeping sizable sums of foreign currency in their homes.

When asked if the Central Bank was concerned about a report that the former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, kept more than $1 million in her bedroom, Dr Addison responded, “It is a worry to all of us, but there is not much to say about it because it is a matter in court.”

He made these remarks at the 113th Monetary Policy Committee on Monday, July 24.

In the meantime, it has been confirmed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor that, Madam Cecilia Abena Dappah has been detained on suspicion of corruption.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), announced in a statement that Cecilia Abena Dapaah, who resigned from her position as Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources on July 22, 2023, had been placed under arrest at 11:55 GMT on July 24, 2023, in connection with alleged theft of large sums of money and other valuable items from her home.

“Ms. Dapaah is being questioned by authorized Officers of the OSP.”

Her arrest comes after the Special Prosecutor’s office received a deluge of reports urging the prompt investigation of a sizeable sum of money stolen from the former Minister’s property.

The heinous theft stunned the populace, causing shockwaves to reverberate throughout the country.

Two housekeepers, Patience Botwe, 18, and Sarah Agyei, 30, are currently accused of participating in the theft and are appearing before an Accra Circuit Court.

It is alleged that they stole an astounding sum of $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghanaian cedis from Madam Dapaah’s residence at Abelenkpe, Accra, during the period between July and October 2022.
