A 30-year-old banker, currently facing trial at the Tarkwa Circuit Court for dishonestly appropriating money from a bank customer, has once again appeared before the same court on a similar charge.
The accused, Edmond Nashiru, entered a plea of not guilty and has been remanded into prison custody.
In this latest case, Chief Inspector Joseph Lartey, who is prosecuting, informed the court presided over by Mrs. Hathia Ama Manu that the complainant, Felicity Acquah, is a rotational nurse residing in New Atuabo.
Felicity maintains a savings account at the Tarkwa branch of the bank, where Edmond serves as a front desk officer. On November 6, 2023, Felicity reported to the Tarkwa Police that she had received multiple mobile alerts on the same day, indicating unauthorized debits totaling GH￠9,781.00 from her account.
According to Chief Inspector Lartey, Felicity sought clarification from Edmond at the banking hall, but he merely claimed that fraudsters had stolen her money, providing no further assistance. Following Felicity’s complaint, a police investigation ensued.
On November 16, 2023, a court order was obtained, and the bank management was served to furnish detailed information on the transactions leading to the alleged theft from Felicity’s account.
The bank’s audit department, upon investigation, submitted a report to the police, identifying Edmond as the perpetrator. The report revealed that Edmond had used his cell phone to transfer the funds from Felicity’s account to two different MTN numbers.
During questioning by the police, Edmond admitted to assisting Felicity in installing a banking application on her phone and obtaining her login details in the process.
The prosecutor further disclosed that Edmond confessed to orchestrating a cover-up by instructing his currently fugitive brother to procure two Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards for the purpose of depositing the stolen money.
After completing the transactions, Edmond and his brother disposed of the SIM cards to avoid apprehension. The court has adjourned the case until Thursday, December 28, 2023, for further proceedings.
