Jantuah urges the Attorney General to file a motion to discontinue the trial of Gyakye Quayson

Assin North

A legal practitioner, Mr. Kwame Jantuah, has called upon Attorney General Godfred Dame to file a nolle prosequi, which would discontinue the criminal trial of James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament-elect for Assin North.

Jantuah expressed concerns that if Gyakye Quayson were to be imprisoned as a result of the trial, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would not be forgiven by the constituents of Assin North.

He suggested that the Attorney General should take the step of discontinuing the case to avoid potential repercussions for the NPP in the constituency, emphasizing that Assin North is not a stronghold of any particular political party and that the NPP should instead engage with the voters on the ground.

In the meantime, Gyakye Quayson is appealing a High Court ruling that ordered his criminal case to be heard on a daily basis. The ruling, issued by Justice Mary Yanzuh on Friday, June 23, rejected an application by Gyakye Quayson’s lawyers to modify the hearing schedule.

Consequently, starting from Tuesday, July 4, Gyakye Quayson is expected to appear in court daily for the proceedings, irrespective of his status as a lawmaker. He views this ruling as a violation of his right to a fair trial.
