NANS in Ghana are appealing for an extension of the deadline for paying school fees

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ghana Chapter, is making an appeal to the authorities of various tertiary institutions in Ghana to consider granting a grace period for the payment of school fees by its Nigerian student members.

In a recent media interview, NANS President Sam Edem drew attention to the unstable exchange rate between the Ghanaian cedi and the Nigerian naira, which has resulted in continuous increases in tuition fees for Nigerian students.

Mr. Edem acknowledged that the Nigerian government is taking measures to address the issue with the naira and urged Ghanaian tertiary institutions to take their plea into consideration.

He stated, “So, while I am putting out word to our government back home, we would appreciate it if a lot more is done about this issue. And we appeal to our institutions here to give the Nigerian students that allowance for the period to ensure that they are able to meet their obligations with regard to fees.”

Lamido Sanusi, former governor of Nigeria’s Central Bank, highlighted in a public lecture in 2022 that there were over 70,000 Nigerian students studying in Ghana, contributing approximately US$1 billion annually towards tuition fees and living expenses.

He emphasized, “Nigeria is today placed third on the list of countries with the highest number of students studying overseas.”
