The Western Regional branch of the Electricity Company has apprehended Armstrong William Arthur, an assembly member from Esshiam-Ntaama in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, on charges of purportedly selling counterfeit electricity meters.
The 72-year-old assemblyman was taken into custody following a report from a customer in Sekondi.
Benjamin Quarcoo, the Western Regional Public Relations Officer of ECG, revealed that upon receiving information about Arthur’s alleged illicit activities, ECG personnel and the police disguised themselves as potential customers and procured some of the counterfeit meters from him.
In an interview, the Public Relations Officer said, “William Arthur’s criminal activities came to light after a tip-off by a customer in Sekondi. We then placed a phone call to him and pretended to be interested in the metres that he sells. With the help of the Police, we were able to arrest him”
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) also revealed that, during the questioning, William Arthur implicated a certain Philip Eshun as his suspected partner in the alleged wrongdoing. Subsequently, Philip Eshun was apprehended in Kojokrom.
“When we went to Eshun’s house, we found that he had installed three of the fake metres. We therefore arrested him as well. They are currently in the custody of the Sekondi Police, who are conducting further investigations into the matter,” he said.
Benjamin Quarcoo also expressed his appreciation for the informant and issued a warning to fraudulent ECG meter vendors, advising them to cease their unlawful activities, as the authorities will not hesitate to apprehend those involved in such criminal acts.
