Stakeholders Advocate for the Passage of Community Service Sentencing Bill in Ghana

Hurds Foundation, a local partner for the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative under the USAID Justice Sector Support Activities is advocating for the Community Service Sentencing Bill to be passed into an Act.

She spoke to Beach NewsRoom in Takoradi as part of activities to sensitize and educate the general public on seeking legal assistance as well as knowledge of the Bill.

The Executive Director of the Hurds Foundation, Eva Ankrah said the exercise is to help the public know about the bill and help push for its passage.

The exercise is expected to take place within 6 communities in 6 districts.

” The Bill is in Parliament, and we are advocating for its passage into an Act. The public should know about its benefits. We are doing in the Ahanta West District, Wassa East, Mpohor, Sekondi -Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), Effia Kwesimintsim Metropolitan Assembly and Shama District, ” she mentioned.

According to her, the passage of the Community Service Sentencing Bill into law, will not decongest the prisons but also save the country some money.

She adds that the move will improve the justice delivery service in the country.

” There are minor crimes which can be given custodial sentencing but we give them sentencing which does not reform them but rather make them more recalcitrant.

These offenders can render services to the community as part of sentencing them for wrongdoings, ” she said.
