Mussa Dankwah – Sheer opulence, vote-buying caused NPP’s defeat in Assin North

Assin North

Mussa K. Dankwah, the Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, has identified several key factors that contributed to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the Assin North by-election.

Before the election, the pollster had revealed that, based on their latest poll, the NPP candidate Charles Opoku was slightly ahead.

During an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Mussa Dankwah stated that the NPP’s loss at Assin North was due to a combination of factors, including the perception that they were persecuting James Gyakye Quayson, the unfinished development projects in Kumawu, and the ostentatious display of wealth and vote-buying by some NPP members. These actions provoked anger among certain segments of the constituency.

Furthermore, he explained that Charles Opoku lost the election primarily because his support base, particularly in NPP strongholds such as Kushea and Breku, did not turn out to vote. James Gyakye Quayson, on the other hand, managed to secure the votes of the undecided voters, which contributed to his victory.

In the by-election, James Gyakye Quayson received 17,245 votes, representing 57.56% of the total, while Charles Opoku of the NPP obtained 12,630 votes, representing 42.15%. The candidate from the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Sefenu Bernice Enyonam, received a minimal 87 votes, equivalent to 0.29%.

The by-election was necessitated by Gyakye Quayson’s removal from Parliament due to his dual citizenship status prior to filing his candidacy for the 2020 elections in the Assin North constituency.
